Food Safety

High quality food for human consumption

Good fish health means high quality salmon for consumers and SSPO also operates monitoring programmes of various sorts to demonstrate the safety and quality of Scottish farmed salmon.

In addition, the SSPO liaises regularly with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) on a range of legislative and food safety matters.

As food businesses, aquaculture producers must be registered with the competent authority and must meet the requirements of relevant food legislation.  Farmers are required under European and UK legislation to have systems and procedures in place to identify the suppliers of stock, maintain traceability throughout production and identify other businesses that they have supplied. Scottish producers have developed and maintain systems that exceed the requirements of the legislation, to ensure full traceability of their salmon throughout the distribution chain.
