Aquaculture is increasingly important to global food security

The Scottish industry is currently the 3rd largest supplier of farmed salmon in the world as aquaculture becomes an increasingly important factor in global food security, providing 46% of total food fish supply.  With governance of the industry receiving growing attention, considerable progress has been made in addressing the sustainability of the sector.

A "Strategy for the Sustainable Development of European Aquaculture" was published by the European Commission in 2009, its objectives being to support research and development in the sector, ensure sustainability and improve governance at all levels.

Scotland provides regular input to international initiatives through participation in the Federation for European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP), the International Salmon Farmers Association (ISFA) and the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organisation (NASCO) and in other relevant fora focusing on such topics as climate change, biodiversity, feed sustainability, fish health and welfare and their implications for the aquaculture industry.
