International Competition

The global aquaculture industry is expanding rapidly, as production tries to keep up with demand. The FAO Fisheries Department Review estimated that demand for fish is likely to increase by at least an extra 30 million tonnes by 2010.

Aquaculture provides a solution to this increasing demand and Scotland is well placed to meet this challenge. The Scottish brand is recognised worldwide and it has a built-in advantage over most competitors by being a day closer to European markets.

“Aquaculture in Scotland has both notable achievements and significant challenges with high quality environments and the products, responsive markets, a world class science and technology base, a confident and notable industry, great things can be achieved.”

Professor James Muir, Assistant Director of the Institute of Aquaculture
