| Research carried out in Caithness and Sutherland confirmed the benefits of a healthy salmon farming industry to rural communities: • The average hourly wage for non-supervisory staff in the survey was £6.23: approximately 40% higher than the national minimum wage; • The average hourly wage for supervisory staff is £10.41: equivalent to an annual salary of £20,299, which is higher than the average salary in the Highlands and Islands; • Over a third of employees have been with the same firm for five years or more; • 50% of the major suppliers used by the industry are located in the Highlands and Islands; • Ullapool secondary school has a roll of 212 of whom 36 have parents employed by Scottish Quality Salmon member companies; |
