Fish Welfare
Salmon are sensitive indicators of water quality and only thrive in a good, clean environment which is why salmon farms are mainly located in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland where there is clean water and sheltered areas.
Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation is pro-active in its drive to continuously improve the welfare of farmed salmon. The average pen is, by volume, greater than an Olympic swimming pool. As salmon occupy 2% of the space available in the pen, the remaining 98% of water is available for swimming. This allows the salmon substantial space to swim freely.
