Recipes, health benefits, consumer advice

Scottish salmon is a delicious and highly nutritious food containing protein, vitamins, trace elements and minerals, all vital ingredients for a healthy, balanced diet.

When you choose Scottish farmed salmon, not only do you get something that’s delicious to eat, but also a food that is proven to be extraordinarily good for you.  Over 5,000 scientific papers support the health benefits claimed by salmon with more research being announced all the time.

Men and women can benefit from eating salmon regularly. Indeed, there is good reason for eating salmon at every stage of life, from pregnancy to babies, through adulthood and into the senior years.  Salmon not only helps people to keep healthy now and in the future, it can also help improve all sorts of conditions.

Hearts and Minds

The most heavily researched area is heart health. But lots of other parts of the body benefit, too. Increasingly, there is evidence of how the long chain Omega 3 fatty acids (found in oily fish, like salmon) help to develop and maintain our eyesight, how they help with conditions such as schizophrenia, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and even protect against sunburn, strokes and some types of cancers, as well as positive effects on the immune system and in mitigating the symptoms of arthritis. Not surprisingly, the FSA’s healthy eating advice is that most of us should be eating more fish – at least two portions a week, of which at least one should be an Omega-3 rich fish, for example salmon, trout, mackerel, herring or sardines .

But perhaps the most exciting are of current research is into how they affect the brain development and function in children, resulting in improved learning and concentration in the classroom!
