Industry Survey

The economic and social contribution made by salmon farming

This annual research publication presents a contemporary snapshot of Scottish salmon farming, providing insights into the economic and social contribution it makes to some of Scotland's most remote rural areas. It indicates current achievements, but also reflects the industry's ambition and confidence. This will underpin its continued development and onward progress.

Salmon Business Confidence Survey

The key findings from the second annual Salmon Business Confidence Survey (SBCS) are:
  • 86% of SSPO member companies plan to increase staff over the next five years (an increase from 78% when compared with the previous survey in December 2010), and;
  • 86% of SSPO member companies expressed a desire to grow sustainably over the next five years (an increase from 70% when compared with the previous survey in December 2010).
The industry report followed the publication of the Scottish Fish Farm Production Survey by the Scottish Government, which reported (published November 2011) that the production of Scottish farmed salmon increased by 6.9% in 2010; the third successive annual increase and the highest level in six years.
