Raising awareness of aquaculture safety in Shetland
Over 80 fish and shellfish farmers attended a health and safety awareness seminar in Scalloway yesterday (Tuesday 7th July).
Organised by the Health and Safety Executive, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Northern Lighthouse Board, with support from Shetland Aquaculture, NAFC Marine Centre, RNLI and other industry stakeholders in the islands, the event was organised to raise awareness of the importance of health and safety in the aquaculture industry.
Qualified instructors and experienced personnel presented practical demonstrations showing how to avoid the most common cause of accidents, including when using marine cranes and lifting equipment, safe entry into confined spaces, fork lift truck/transport issues, manual handling, lifejackets, life rafts and flares and cold shock.
David Sandison, General Manager of Shetland Aquaculture and Secretary of Scottish Salmon Producers' Organisation, said: “The event was a great way to maintain awareness of the importance of health and safety, as it helped to identify common hazard and precautions. The industry has a well-trained workforce, but it is vital that we do not rest of on our laurels.”
A similar workshop was held in Oban earlier this year.
