Supporting the community in which we operate
Salmon farmers are very aware of their responsibility to the communities where the industry develops and in which it is so important for local social and economic sustainability. Fish farmers see themselves as being an integrated part of the local rural economy, with surveys showing that 78% of all those employed in fish farming live within 10 miles of their place of work and 88% live within 20 miles.
Every opportunity is taken to communicate, listen to concerns and share the advantages of a vibrant industry within the locality in which it operates.
“Locally produced salmon helps us attract visitors from all over the world to sample our fantastic seafood menu” - Bev Oulten, Morefield Hotel, Ullapool
“Sponsorship from salmon farming companies helps keep shinty alive and thriving in the Highlands” - Lochaber Camanchd Club
"The salmon farming industry is a very important customer for my business, keeping it sustainable and successful" - Alasdair Ferguson, Ferguson Transport
"Locally produced, high quality salmon ... has kept our business growing" - Iain Boyd, Ullapool Smokehouse
SSPO survey figures show that from 2006-2009 there was over £113 million capital investment in the salmon sector, with 93% concentrated in the 5 Highlands and Islands Local Authorities, where salmon farming is a significant economic sector. This reflects a clearly articulated wish on the part of the industry to maintain sustainable growth and development in those areas. However, there is an important need for Local Authorities to begin to recognise the local potential of the sector for sustainable economic development and to reflect that in their strategic thinking and regional plans.
