Challenges and solutions

Salmon – both wild and farmed – are of vital importance for many remote, rural localities in Scotland.  A robust and diverse rural economy is a key requirement for the sustainability of Scotland’s West Highlands and Islands. Scottish salmon farmers support the development of these regions and are committed to sustainable growth and environmental conservation within them.  They are conscious of their role as stewards of the pristine environment in which their fish thrive and of their responsibility to act as good neighbours to those who share it.

Recent research in Mull & Oban, Shetland and the Outer Hebrides has indicated that tourists visiting our coastline are interested to see the activities that contribute to local livelihoods. Very few people have a negative response to commercial fishing, pleasure sailing, fish farming or angling. Rather, people tend to see these activities as points of interest. At this level, sustainability is all about places, people, and prosperity and the challenge is to present the location, community culture and livelihoods in an integrated package.

Our industry video illustrates how salmon farming operates within the communities and environment of Scotland.
