Science Behind Fish Farming
Areas of scientific research and development
Salmon farmers recognise that they must demonstrate their commitment to sound principles of optimal welfare, high standards of husbandry and environmental management.
The salmon farming industry in Scotland has a long history of supporting and investing in both fundamental and applied research with the objectives of improving production efficiency and ensuring high standards of environmental performance and fish health and welfare. Support and investment in areas of scientific and other research prioritised by SSPO has continued in 2010. Strong links are also maintained with academic institutions, providing input and direction for major research projects and SSPO representatives participate in the work of the Scottish Aquaculture Research Forum whose main aim is to support research into aquaculture and related areas.
SSPO’s technical work focuses on core areas central to the industry’s main objectives. The programme concentrates on developing the evidence base to underpin and support the sustainable development of the industry; generating information to support the farming of salmon through the application of high quality science; and underpinning self-regulation via the industry’s Code of Good Practice.
